About GERD

Overview

GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, occurs when stomach acid frequently refluxes back into the esophagus. According to the Montreal definition, GERD is defined as a condition that develops when the reflux of stomach contents causes troublesome symptoms and/or complications.1

Heartburn and GERD prevalence

  • More than 60 million Americans experience heartburn at least once a month2
  • An estimated 10% to 20% of individuals experience heartburn or regurgitation on at least a weekly basis3
